The Truth About Medium - by Gary E. Schwartz, PH. D. and William L. Simon

Schwartz is a Psychology Professor at the University of Arizona.  He has been studying mediums for several years.  Many of the mediums he has studied have been or have become quite famous, such as John Edward of Crossing Over and Cross Country fame and Allison DuBois, who’s life inspired the NBC television show Medium.  Many of Schwartz’ experiments have shown amazing results.  The author claims that if you’re a skeptic, this book might just make you believe, or at the very least, make you question your beliefs.  Enter this book with an open mind, Schwartz asks.  I agree.

This is a short book but full of clinical and technical details of Dr. Schwartz’ research with DuBois and other mediums.  It sounds like I’m describing an entry in a medical journal, and it very well could be, but it is written in layman’s terms so that it’s an easy read for young adults to old.  Schwartz describes his double and triple blind studies and their results, as well as the results of research by accident (meaning something happened outside of the closely monitored clinic environment and it turned into research just because the doctor was astounded).  The book cites many references and includes many relevant quotes.  My favorite quote in the book is the one that begins the first chapter by William James, M.D., “In order to disprove the law that all crows are black, it is enough to find one white crow.”  How true!

I did enjoy this book very much, I couldn’t put it down.  I do, however, enjoy the technical aspect of research and was able to easily follow it.  If you’re looking for a book that’s just entertaining or that describes how Allison sees dead people and how they communicate, or describes the work she’s done outside of this research, such as with the police and prosecutor’s office, this book is not for you.  I do feel there could have been more to the book in the entertainment sense.  I felt that I should have read Schwartz’ other books first in order to get everything out of this book that it had to offer.  Therefore I cannot say “Don’t miss it” but I will enthusiastically give it 3 bones..

4 BONES PSYCHIC PROTECTION: Beginnings  - by Ted Andrews

From the back cover:

"Develop the Tools for Protection and Balance!

At a time when so much information is available and so many present themselves as experts, a down-to-earth manual of psychic principles and common-sense practices has never been so needed.  From one of the most experienced and best teachers in the psychic/holistic field today comes a handbook for psychic self-defense that everyone can use."

This is the first book I read when I decided that there was more out there to explore than the traditional Christian beliefs that I was raised with.  I needed to explore not only my surroundings but also my own spirituality and beliefs.  In order to do this I felt I should read up on taking some steps to protect myself just in case I dove in too deep, if you catch my meaning.  I started on the internet and found some very useful web sites with some useful advice, and I also found some not so useful sites with some seemingly dangerous advice!  I ended up at the local bookstore and found this book.

'Psychic Protection' has been very helpful in that it is a teaching book for those of us who don't know everything there is to know.  Now it won't teach you everything there is to know, of course, but it does inform you of many of the "myths, misconceptions, and unfounded fears of the unseen world", as well as to learn to develop your own psychic powers and ward off the powers of others who might try to invade your psyche.  The book also goes into "techniques for spiritual cleansing, protection, and overall balance", which is something most beginners wouldn't even have considered.  For the most part, this book gives you the tools to protect yourself while you are still in the experimental stages of finding yourself spiritually.

The book is very believable, somewhat entertaining, with informative content that is easy to read and understand.  I have been unable to find follow up or preview for this book, nor have I ever seen it advertised anywhere.  Based on that, I have to give the book 4 bones.  Congratulations Mr. Andrews, keep up the good writing!

4 BONES Ghost Hunting: True Stories of Unexplained Phenomena from The Atlantic Paranormal Society - by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson

On back cover: “The Atlantic Paranormal Society, also known as T.A.P.S., is the brainchild of two plumbers by day, paranormal investigators by night: Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson. Their hair-raising investigations, fueled by their unique abilities and a healthy dose of scientific method, have made them the subject of a hit TV show: the SCI FI Channel’s Ghost Hunters.

Now their experiences are in print for the first time, as Jason and Grant recount for us, with the help of veteran author Michael Jan Friedman, the stories of some of their most memorable investigations.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Yes, right, you may be saying…because you are a true fan! However, I enjoyed it not only because I was a true fan. The book is very easy to read and entertaining.  They write about some cases which they investigated long before the show. The majority of the cases they do write about, nevertheless, are the ones we have seen on the show on Wednesday nights. And even though we have already seen them on the show, I did enjoy reading about them!

The one thing that I didn’t like about the book is the way they continued the drama with Brian. However, since I do believe they do this for more ratings, I can forgive them and give the book 4 bones.

“Paranormal encounters, Discussion, and Research from the Vaults of ghostvillage.com”

Who hasn’t surfed around the net and come across Ghostvillage.com? This paranormal website started out in 1999. Today, it is well-known and huge, bursting with paranormal stories and encounters. People from all over the globe have read articles on this site and have discussed and learned more about the paranormal. So, Jeff Belanger has compiled together paranormal encounters and discussions from his website into this book. It is very interesting to read about death, ghosts, folklore and legends as well as animal spirits and paranormal investigations. Belanger gives us a great book with one regret: it is too short!

4 bones: Good- I really like it!
