Our reviews of Magazines and E-zines are based on a number of factors:

  • Believability - Is the magazine based on facts or is it obviously fiction?
  • Originality - Is this an original concept, or does it seem like I've seen it before?
  • Entertainment - Was the magazine entertaining enough to keep my attention or did I lose interest after an article or two?
  • Content - Does the magazine feature paranormal articles and stories or is it full of useless ads with only a few things to read?
  • Production - Is the magazine put together in a way to allow the reader to find and absorb all of the intended information?
  • Follow up - Does the magazine have a web site or are we able to order back issues in order to keep up or catch what we missed?
  • Viewer opinion - Cast your votes, they do have an impact on our ratings.

3 BONES Spirit Quest E-zine - http://www.spirit-quest.ca/index.php

Not available in hard copy

I found this "E-zine" in a paranormal magazine and E-zine directory.  I'm not quite sure how it got there, but I did find Spirit Quest quite interesting.  This is nothing more than a very nicely done PHP Forum.  It seems somewhat new so I'll go a bit easy on them for now.

Spirit Quest discusses the different forms of Astral Projection, from dreams to out of body experiences (OBE) to near death experiences.  The subject matter is intriguing to me because I know very little about it.  The authors (moderators) seem to be quite knowledgeable on the subjects and they do provide some thought provoking discussions in the forum, though there seem to be only the mods and 3 or 4 others talking (but we're assuming they are a newer site, so that is completely understandable).  Thought provoking aside, it seems as if they are actually trying to teach people to do these things, including the 'art' of putting oneself into a state of paralysis!  I'm not sure I would want to feel responsible for teaching someone this, especially via an online forum.  But, as stated, I don't know much about this and maybe that's how it is done.

The zine also offers a library for members to find music, videos and e-books.  They have an astral projection encyclopedia and many articles taken from outside sources.  I especially enjoyed browsing through their product reviews - all books as far as I could tell.  I also found unique the fact that members are encouraged to keep online journals of their OBE experiences for all to read.  There were only 3 journals to date with minimal entries, but it's a start.

This site has a long, long way to go before they, in my opinion, can submit themselves to an E-zine directory as all of the articles I read came from outside sources.  The stories archive is a mixture of outside articles and previous posts.  The moderators should, and would do very well in writing their own articles for their zine.  This would be a huge improvement.

While I found this to be about as far from an E-zine as it gets, I did enjoy the site and do take into account that it seems to be new.  Therefore, based on the original content, the thought provoking discussions, and the unique activities offered, I'm going to push this one to 3 Bones.  They will, however, need to step it up a bit to stay at 3, let alone rank higher.  Of course, you are encouraged to check them out for  yourselves and cast your votes because my vote is only one!

3 BONES UFO Magazine - Website:  http://www.ufomag.com/

I came across this link yesterday and was immediately interested as they are advertising the new TV show “UFO Hunters” (the show aired on the History Channel). I thought that I could find out if the staff of the magazine works on the show as well, but I found no answers. I was a bit disappointed because I wanted to see if I could at least read a couple of articles from one of their issues before buying the magazine, but there were no sample issues anywhere.  After clicking on archives, I found an article called “For the doubters among you, we offer this one:” and was surprised to see a pic of a glowing form in a bedroom. Forgive me folks, but how do you know this is an alien and not a ghostly apparition? There is no mention if the person who took this pic actually heard or saw a UFO over his home. The article just goes on to say this: “Another alien contactee, who wishes to remain anonymous for the time being, took this photo of an orb alien being in his bedroom. And this is only one of many ETs that our contactee friend has captured on his digital camera.” There is also a lot of reference to orbs being aliens, and I just don’t buy that. The rest of the articles are well written, and some are amusing, overall interesting enough to read them, folks. But they are a point of view by the writer, and no real facts to show, just opinions. However, I did enjoy some of them because I happen to have the same point of view the author has.

The site offers the price of the subscriptions of course. You must pay $39.99 for the whole year, which isn’t bad. What I can say is that I’m not really motivated in buying the magazine and give it 3 bones.

5 BONES FATE Magazine - True reports of the unknown! - Visit the Website: http://www.fatemag.com/

I came across this while looking at good paranormal magazines, and downloaded the sample issue. I was impressed with the authors listed (Brad Steiger among others) and I also liked the layout and the diversity of paranormal topics. From UFO’s to mythical creatures and ghosts as well as tips on ghost hunting, this magazine has it all! Not only this caught my attention, but the fact that it has been continuously published since 1948! I also discovered that right now there is a trial subscription where you can get 7 issues for the price of six ($19.95) and I think it is a pretty good deal! The total year costs $32.95, way cheaper than TAPS ParaMagazine!

I got to reading some of the articles, and could not put it down! I especially enjoyed  ‘A-Ghosting we will go’ by Michelle Belanger. The articles in the sample issue were a real treat and the UFO ones were extremely interesting.

I give this magazine 5 bones!

Founders statement:

"Why put out a magazine?

This magazine is a direct result of two professions coming together, those who toil in the news and those who explore the unknown. TAPS ParaMagazine seeks as the goal to provide you with quality and integrity on a subject requiring a full exploration, documentation and discussion. It has attempted to maintain its TAPS roots and become an outlet where paranormal discussions can be fed, flourish and be devoured by the critical thinking and research necessary to answer the basic question: If not that, then what is it?”

I started subscribing to this magazine because I was a true TAPS fan and felt that it would be interesting to have on my shelf of paranormal literature. The magazine has some spelling and grammatical errors from time to time. Contrary to what many would believe it to be, this is not just a magazine on hauntings and ghosts. Loren Coleman has a corner for cryptozoology and discusses such famous monsters as Nessie and Bigfoot. There is also a spot for the famous psychic, Constantine, who answers questions about the other side. Every month we are also given a Sneak Peek preview of the cast and crew of “Ghost Hunters” as well. The magazine also covers Hauntings state by state and every month at the very end an Evidence Bag page where they look into reader submitted photographs, which usually prove to be anything but paranormal.

I like the magazine, but was actually hoping for a more ghost related magazine than anything else. I was actually hoping for a magazine related to ghost hunting tips and techniques as well as a magazine where we could read about famous haunted spots or readers submitting their experiences in haunted places. Instead, I get a compendium of the paranormal: UFO’s, aliens, Bigfoot, Nessie, and ghosts too…bummer!

2 BONES Atlantis Rising - Publisher & Editor: J. Douglas Kenyon

This publication claims to cover ancient mysteries, future science and unexplained anomalies.  Mostly, from what I was able to get through, the magazine focuses on its namesake, Atlantis, as well as UFOs, religion and government conspiracies.  Apart from the UFOs, I don’t consider the other subjects to be paranormal in nature, although they do attempt to tie it in.

The articles are intelligently written for the most part and seem to be well researched, though mostly one-sided in their viewpoints.  The graphics are eye-catching and fun to look at.  The content is original and they have a website (http://www.atlantisrising.com/index.shtml) that seems rather thrown together, which features a sample of the magazine in PDF format.  The site does contain a message forum with some interesting topics, which I thoroughly enjoyed.  Unfortunately I cannot include the forum as a basis for this review.  The magazine is quite pricey at $40 for 12 issues or $5.95 per issue, but if you subscribe online you can send a second subscription to a friend for free, provided the friend lives 100+ miles away.

Overall I was unimpressed and feel this magazine still has a way to go before catching my interest (or subscription fee).  I give Atlantis Rising 2 Bones, but may check back with the website to see if the next issue is any better.
